Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is the most commonly used procedure for treating varicose and spider veins. Dr Ramesh Velu is a qualified Vascular Surgeon and member of the Australasian College of Phlebology.

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a sclerosant into the vein using a fine needle which has an effect on the walls of the vein causing it to shut down. Over the next few days, the vein will collapse. Optimal results may take up to 3 months and it may require several sessions of injection treatment to the affected area.

Sclerotherapy is done in the surgeon's room and doesn't require hospital admission. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can resume normal activities immediately. Sclerotherapy requires the use of compression stockings for a period of up to 6 weeks after treatment.

Before treatment commences you will need an appointment to have your legs assessed by Dr Velu. This will involve an ultrasound examination of your veins to ensure the best treatment outcome is chosen i.e. microsclerotherapy or ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy (USG).

The cost of the treatment will be discussed during your initial consultation and will vary depending on your chosen treatment. An estimate for treatment can be given to you at the time of consultation.

Although all medical treatments have side-effects, the most common side effects from sclerotherapy are usually mild, including skin staining, and resolve themselves quickly. Whilst other much rarer side-effects can be more severe.
