Dr Ramesh Velu Image
Dr Ramesh Velu MS FRCS FRACS (VAS) Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon

Dr Ramesh Velu trained as a Vascular surgeon in India, UK & Australia and has Specialist registration with the Australia Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Dr Velu has worked in Birmingham UK, Perth WA, Hamilton NZ and Townsville NQ. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (Scotland) since 2000.Dr Velu successfully completed the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Vascular Surgery in 2006. Since then he has taken up the position of Senior Staff Specialist within the Vascular Surgery department at The Townsville Hospital. Dr Velu consults privately at the Mater Hospital Townsville and also Mater Mackay.

Dr Velu has extensive experience in endovascular surgical procedures along with the traditional open surgical procedures, in keeping with world best vascular practices. Dr Velu regularly attends international training programs and conferences worldwide assuring that Townsville patients are receiving the best treatment possible. He has published articles in various national & international journals.

In this position Dr Velu is the Supervisor of Vascular trainees that are placed in Townsville, who are on the national training program for Vascular Surgery.

Dr Velu is involved with the James Cook University Medical School as a clinical teacher of medical students, assessor for medical students examinations & supervisor for honours projects, and participates in the yearly interview selection process of new medical students.

After 25 years, Anne-Maree finally calls Townsville home. During this time, she has developed a wealth of experience to support her medical administration roles ranging from Obstetrics and Gynaecology to Vascular, before joining our team in 2023.

Kyla Practice Nurse

Kyla joined the team as the practice Nurse in December 2022. Kyla completed her Bachelor of Nursing in 2021 with an unrestricted Registration with the Australia Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). She has since worked in a variety of different settings, from sports medicine to now vascular nursing. Kyla has a passion for patient care and holistic nursing. She works alongside Dr Velu to ensure you have the best experience as NQ Vascular.

Nilanthi Registered Nurse / Surgical Instrument Assistant Nurse

Nilanthi is a registered nurse with more than 20 plus years of experience as a surgical and clinical nurse. She has further completed a post graduate diploma in perioperative nursing and practices as a perioperative registered nurse in various specialities in the theatre environment. Nilanthi comes with a wealth of knowledge in vascular built throughout the years while working with Dr Velu.

Poonam Leavesley Vascular Sonographer

Poonam has practiced diagnostic (General and Vascular ultrasound) in Australia and New Zealand in a wide variety of clinical settings ranging from private centres to tertiary teaching hospitals. She enjoys clinical ultrasound problem solving as well as teaching ultrasound skills to sonographers and clinicians. Poonam completed her Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound (DMU) training while based at Wellington Hospital, New Zealand and has worked with renowned vascular sonographers and vascular surgeons in Australia and New Zealand.

Jake Vascular Sonographer

Jake is a born and raised North Queensland local, having also completed his ultrasound training at the Townsville University Hospital (TUH). Jake is passionate about vascular ultrasound.  He has spent time managing the TUH vascular ultrasound laboratory, working closely with our local NQ vascular surgeons. Jake is a diligent and attentive worker who values high quality workmanship and service with a smile. He enjoys developing close professional relationships with his patients and peers to deliver a positive ultrasound experience.
